Why You Need Water to Stay Hydrated
Unfortunately, you can’t rely on fizzy soda drinks or even juices for your health. These are much too high in sugar and calories, which in turn contributes to diabetes, weight gain and tooth decay. Did you know that a can of most soda drinks will contain as much sugar as two Cadburys Cream Eggs? Next time you drink a can of 7up, imagine yourself eating two whole Cadburys Cream Eggs instead. Would that be healthy? Fruit juice will get you many more important nutrients and is very good for you in small doses – but it’s not actually that far behind when it comes to sugar content.
Then there are options like milk, but these contain lots of saturated fats (healthy but calorific) as well as minerals that are good in smaller doses but not a good idea to OD on.
So, you need water, simply because you can’t get the necessary hydration from other sources. And how much water should you drink a day? It is commonly recommended that you aim for eight glasses (8 ounces each) per day. This equates to roughly two litres of water or half a gallon.
But other sources recommend that we should be drinking even more than that. They claim that most of us are on the brink of hydration at all times and that we should really be drinking constantly.
Why So Much?
Remember for starters that the body is made up of 60% water. That’s a lot! This is because the cells are full of water and without that water, they wouldn’t be able to survive or communicate. We use water to digest our food, to keep our blood flowing and to absorb nutrients – which is why it is impossible to survive without water for more than 3 days.
And as a result, as soon as we start to lose water, we begin to suffer in our brain function (1, 2) and in our energy levels. One study (3) demonstrated this and looked at how losing just 1.36% water following exercise could cause headaches, impair mood and damage concentration – unless that water was replenished immediately afterward.
Other studies show how losing 1% of body-weight can lead to problems with physical performance limiting endurance and also damage brain function in numerous other ways. (Do bear in mind that 1% is quite a large amount of water however.)
Drinking more water on the other hand will increase the metabolism leading to increase fat burning and even reduce the appetite to prevent binge eating. Two separate studies appear to confirm that drinking 500ml of water will immediately increase the metabolism by 24-30% (4).
And more importantly for many people, dehydration has also been shown to increase the likelihood of developing:

There are three main types of water filter system that you can get for your home. These are:
Pitcher Filters/Activated Carbon Filters
These filters are small enough and portable enough to stand on your kitchen countertop or dining table. You pour water directly into them and then wait for it to pass through a filtration medium such as activated charcoal. This is sometimes called an activated carbon filter system – charcoal being a form of carbon.
This can remove many impurities such as pesticides, chlorine and solvents, but it is not so good at removing heavy metals and limescale. It works because the material is so porous that it is able to collect tiny particles as the water passes through and thereby act like a ‘sieve’ in order to remove impurities.
That said, activated charcoal is actually just one of several ‘media’ (the plural of medium) that can be used in order to collect these impurities. Other popular choices include granular carbon, sand, garnet, anthracite, zeolite, greensand and manganese dioxide.
The plus side of this kind of filter system, is that it is very affordable and small. The downside is that you will need to regularly replace the carbon filters – about once every two months.
As we will see though, using a backwashing filter from Fleck can help to reduce this issue.
Reverse Osmosis
Reverse osmosis is a process that forces water to pass through a membrane that will then act like a kind of sieve. These types of filter systems require a pump in many cases to power them and thus will usually need to be plugged into the mains. As such, most of these systems are a little bigger and little more expensive. They are often referred to as ‘countertop systems’ because they live in the kitchen on the countertop and can’t be easily moved around like a pitcher filter.
In other cases, a reverse osmosis system might be fitted to your sink so that it changes the water as it comes out of the taps! Reverse osmosis is great for removing limescale, nitrates and salts but not as good at removing bacteria.

Distillation
A distillation system works by boiling water. Boiling water alone is not sufficient if you want to make sure it is clean. While this will kill bacteria (making it a useful way to drink water when you’re abroad if you want to avoid a runny stomach), it will do nothing to the toxins such as fluoride and arsenic and it won’t remove heavy metals like mercury either.
But that’s not quite how a distillation system works – rather, a distillation system works by boiling the water until it evaporates and then collected that evaporated water for you to drink. Again, not all impurities are removed this way and volatile organic compounds in particular are likely to make it through.
Many water filters will use a combination of these different systems and the best option for you will likely depend on how much you want to spend, how much room you have and which contaminants you’re most worried about. If you want to add an additional level of filtering, then you can combine a backwashing carbon filter at the source and then use an additional distillation process once the water leaves the faucet.

How Fleck Water Filters Work
Fleck water filters normally use a backwashing system. A backwashing water filter is essentially a large tank that is able to clean and renew itself over time via a process called backwashing. These tanks will temporarily reverse the flow of water so that it will enter from the bottom of the filter bed, lift it and rinse it and then exit through the top of the filter tank.
What this means is that the medium being used such as activated charcoal is getting cleared out and thus will last longer than it might normally. While the filter is working normally, it will be considered to be in ‘service mode’. At a preset time when you are less likely to be using the water in your home, the control valve will initiate the backwash process and the unwanted contaminants will mostly be removed from the medium.
These Fleck systems work using the regular carbon filtering system then, but they extend their lifespan and efficiency by adding the backwashing function on top. Some also add further additional functionality. For example, the calcite systems will increase the pH of acidic water. This is a ‘sacrificial’ medium that will normally dissolve as it works, meaning that it will need to be replaced from time to time. When comparing different filters of this nature, one factor to consider is the frequency with which this needs to be replaced.
There are other considerations to keep in mind when looking at different backwash filters. One is the backwash rate. This can different significantly from one filter to another and it needs to be calculated based on the square footage of the media bed and the density of the media. For example, a carbon bed in a 10” by 54” filter tank will often have a five gallon-per-minute flow restrictor. This is enough to clean the carbon but not so much as to unseat the filter bed itself.
Another consider is the service flow. This will likewise be limited by the size of the tank and type of media and basically reflects the fact that some media require longer to work than others.
Sediment Filters
Fleck also manufactures sediment filters. These are filters designed to remove ‘suspended solids’ or particulate that can build up in the water. These can include dust, dirt, iron and rust. These work in a very similar manner to other filters but with media chosen specifically for removing this particular kind of contaminant.
Why You Should Consider Getting a Water Softener
On top of filters, some people will choose to install additional systems to their home water supply called ‘ion exchange systems’. These break down limescale by splitting the atoms of contaminating substances and then replacing those ions with sodium ions. This makes the water feel softer and removes limescale, thereby improving it in a number of ways.
So what are these benefits and why do you need to soften your water?
What is Hard Water?
The best way to answer this question is first by considering what makes water hard in the first place. The answer to this is minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. These are present in water in very small quantities but don’t actually cause us any harm. In fact, they can be considered good for us as they help to strengthen the bones and connective tissue. Magnesium may also help with sleep!
The problem is that ‘hard water’ will contain too much of these minerals and that means they can build up over time and leave deposits which we know as ‘limescale’. These are the deposits that you find collecting in the bottom of your kettle, around the edges of your taps and around your sink’s plugholes. These deposits are unsightly, they are unhealthy and they can also cause damage to your appliances and shorten the lifespan of things like washing machines and dishwashers. Essentially, you have hard grains made from the same material as bone moving through your pipes and through your systems, which can build up over time and eventually cause systems to corrode or grind to a halt. Flakes of old limescale in our tea and coffee are of course no fun at all and the build-up around taps etc. can be so severe as to be night impossible to remove – leading to an early bathroom renovation.

Using Testing Kits and Identifying if You Need Water Softeners
You might now be wondering whether or not you need a water softener and how you can tell if you do. The answer is that you will need test the issue yourself and there are two ways to do this.
One option is to take a clear bottom of water that is half full (or half empty) and fill it with about 8-10 ounces of tap water. Now, squirt in a couple of drops of a pure soap and shake it well. Let it settle for a while and you’ll see one of two things happen. If a scummy film forms, then this indicates that you have hard water and you should consider getting a water softener as well as a water filter.
On the other hand though, your water might form a nice solution that looks ready to wash with. In that case, you probably have soft water and can go ahead and skip the softener.
You might also notice a few other symptoms that suggest hard water.
